My Spin on My World - Eric Smith

Good Bye to an Old Friend

I just reviewed my profile.  I realized that I had to add another year to my age - bummer, but I guess getting older beats the alternative!  I noticed that my profile included a statement about my dog, Cody.  Well, I had to make a tough decision the other day.  I decided that Cody's time was coming to an end.  So, I took him to the Vet for euthanasia .  Man, that was one sad day.  Cody had been a wonderful pet for over 14 years.  He loved us, my wife and I, and we loved him.  As he grew older, he just didn't slow down.  We called him our old puppy.  But, this past summer, Cody's health began to decline.  The last few months have been sad as we watched him decline and knowing that an even sadder day was quickly approaching. Cody was cremated and his remains are buried in a capsule in our backyard.  We miss him.

Near the Razor's Edge

Recently, I have had quite a hard time.  I became terribly sick, had other health problems, and some financial tightness.  This was a very painful time.  In contrast, just before all that, I was very comfortable - health was impeccable, finances no concern at all.  All this makes me realize just how close calamity really is.  We grow comfortable and confident that such problems are far removed from us.  We cannot even accurately relate to such problems and hardships.  We begin to feel all but bullet proof.  But not so, the line between ease and discomfort is razor thin and we live so so close to that line.  I have a whole new perspective.  I realize that my life is right at that thin line.  I have a new appreciation for health, wealth and ease.  I am more compassionate toward those who are in hardship.  I now pray for others with more fervor and sincerity.  I know that my life is truly in the hands of God and dependent on His grace and mercy.  I value the prayers of others as priceless, and the compassion of close friends with incomparable worth.  May God bless me richly as I now know that without Him, its all up to me. And, I am not able to control all, if any, factors of my life.

The Hitler Myth

Ian Kershaw

This book explains how it was possible for a mere WWI corporal, Adolf Hitler, rose to power. Man this is a tough one to read. The snetences are very long and the inserts via many hyphens causes me to slowly read through the details.  However,  the author has well divided the content into sections that lend assistance to the reader's understanding. I'm not finished with this one as I read it between other books. But, already, I can see how Hitler rose to such influential power.  Kershaw also addresses the road to Hitler's failure and demise as well as the issue of Genocide that became Hitler's nasty legacy.  I'll post more as I continue to read this book.

Crime Scene Jerusalem

Alton Gansky

Max Odom, who is dealing with the loss of family members, is a CSI detective who needs some time away from the daily grind.  Thanks to his boss, he finds himself in Jerusalem to address an assembly of Israeli law enforcement agencies. But, by some strange twist of events, he is taken back in time to investigate the death of Christ. So, in first century Jerusalem, Max, in his 20th century clothes and with his CSI kits in hand, is escorted to all of the relevant, scenes and persons to gather evidence.  But why? And, the answer to that question makes the book all worth the read.  At times this book is slow.  The CSI approach is not very interesting. In fact, if not for the last 20 pages, I would say that this book is not worth the time.  But as the book concludes, I believe every reader will be glad the time was invested in the read.

Deleted

Robert Wise

Sam Sloan, a police detective, finds himself investigating computer crimes and doing so along side the FBI and CIA.  He enlists his daughter to hack firewalls of various agencies to provide case breaking clues. This book is simple and cute.  Its not particularly a great book.  The story line is simple, the characters are weak and their conversations are even more weak. Deleted reads like a middle school novel.  In fact, it would be good book for adolescents to read as it explores the relationship between  knowledge, skills, devices and the intent of God as he works in the lives of men and women.
